How Long Does It Take to Get a Wedding Dress? (UK Timelines Explained)

It's one of the first questions newly engaged brides often ask and one we can't always give a straight answer to. How long does it actually take to get a wedding dress in the UK? The honest answer is that it depends on how you buy.

Understanding the difference between your bridal dress options is one of the most important things to do at the start of your wedding planning journey, as the delivery and alterations of your dress need to fit within the overall timeline of the celebration.

To help you get a view of what paths you can choose from, we've put together a clear breakdown of the various timelines so you can plan accordingly and avoid the stress of leaving things a little too late.

Made-to-order: allow 6 to 9 months as a minimum

The majority of wedding dresses sold in UK bridal boutiques are made-to-order. This means that when you say yes to a dress, your boutique takes your measurements and uses them to select the most appropriate size from the designer's size chart. That size is then ordered and the gown is made and shipped to the UK or from wherever their base is. It sounds straightforward, and it is, but the timelines involved are often longer than most brides expect.

Most of the designers we stock at Brides & Bustles work to a lead time of around 4 to 6 months from order to delivery. For our American designers, Sottero & Midgley, Wtoo Brides and Justin Alexander Adore, that typically means 5 to 6 months. For our European labels, Monica Loretti (based in Italy) and White Rose Bridal, timelines can run similarly, though lead times can vary depending on the time of year and how busy the brand is.

Once your wedding dress arrives at the boutique, you'll also need time for an independent seamstress to make any adjustments. That typically adds another 6 to 8 weeks to the process. So when you add it all together, ordering made-to-order and feeling completely ready on your wedding day comfortably requires 9 to 12 months from start to finish.

Our strong advice is to start shopping at least 12 months before your wedding date if you're planning to go made-to-order. That gives you time to visit boutiques without pressure, find the perfect dress, place the order, and have everything fitted without anyone needing to rush.

What happens if your wedding is sooner than that?

Life doesn't always follow a tidy timeline, and plenty of brides come to us with a wedding date that's closer than 12 months away, sometimes a lot closer...! This scenario is more common than you might think, and it's rarely as catastrophic as it first seems.

If you have 6 to 9 months, made-to-order is often still possible, but it's worth having an honest conversation with your boutique during your first appointment about timelines. Some designers offer a rush service for an additional fee, which can bring lead times down by a few weeks. It's not always available, and it's not always necessary, but it's worth asking about the possibility if time is tight.

If you have less than 6 months, you'll want to explore other routes.

Our Ivory Outlet: take it home the same day

If your wedding is less than 6 months away, or you simply want the security of seeing and trying on exactly what you're buying, Our Ivory Outlet is the place to book. This dedicated bridal outlet space offers a curated selection of gowns from our designers, available at significantly reduced prices and ready to take home on the day.

Outlet dresses are the same quality as anything else in the boutique. They've simply been tried on in appointments rather than worn at a wedding, and all are in pristine condition. Because you're buying the physical garment rather than placing an order, the only timeline to factor in is any tailoring you'll need done, which typically takes 6 to 8 weeks. Our selection changes regularly, so it's worth booking an appointment specifically to see what's available rather than browsing online.

A note on bridesmaids

If you're also planning to order your bridesmaids' dresses through us, the same timeline logic applies. Richard Designs bridesmaids' dresses are also made to order, and with multiple people involved in the fitting and colour decision process, it is even more important to leave enough time. We always recommend getting bridesmaids sorted as soon as possible, ideally within a similar timeframe to the wedding dress itself, but not quite as long.

The bottom line

If your wedding is 12 or more months away, you have a comfortable amount of time to shop thoughtfully and order made-to-order. If it's 6 to 12 months away, you still have good options, but the conversation about timing needs to happen at your first appointment. If it's less than 6 months away, off-the-peg and the Ivory Outlet are your friends, and there we can help you find something beautiful that's ready to go.

Whatever your timeline, the most important step is booking an appointment and having that conversation sooner rather than later. The earlier you come in, the more options you have.

Book your appointment at Brides & Bustles here and let's find your perfect dress, whatever the timeline.
