While that beautiful black lace set or those classic white briefs might be your daily favourites or something you know will impress, they will not benefit you during a bridal fitting. Here’s why:
Dark or Bright-White Underwear: If you wear bright white or black knickers under a traditional ivory or off-white wedding gown, it creates a harsh contrast against your natural skin tone. Because bridal fabrics reflect light in a very specific way, that sudden shift from your skin tone to a dark or bright white fabric underneath creates a visible "shadow" or outline. Strangely enough, bright white underwear is often just as visible as black under ivory gowns!
Heavy Crepes: Crepe is a gorgeous, fluid, and substantial fabric, but it behaves a bit like silk in that it hugs the body beautifully. If you have a seam, a lace trim, or a thick waistband on your knickers, it creates a physical ridge. Crepe will mould right over that ridge, making your underwear lines completely visible from the outside.
Layered Tulle: While a ballgown with 10 layers of tulle is excellent at hiding things, modern tulle and A-line gowns often have a very fitted, sleek bodice or a lightweight lining underneath those layers to keep the dress comfortable. It's more than likely that you won't need to wear or buy a fancy new bra for your bridal appointment. This is because many modern wedding dresses are designed with incredible built-in structure, cups, and boning, meaning you probably won’t even wear a bra on your actual wedding day.
However, during the consultation, you’ll be trying on a massive variety of bridal necklines—from strapless and plunge to halter and off-the-shoulder. With that in mind:
What bra to wear/bring: A trusty, comfortable nude strapless bra. Having a strapless bra makes it incredibly easy for your stylist to tuck the straps away so you can see the neckline of the dress exactly as it’s meant to look. A strapless bra will also help you see better how good the dress looks without those distracting straps getting in the way.
What to avoid: Heavily padded push-up bras and bras with lots of detail. These can unnaturally distort how the bodice fits you, making it harder to judge how the actual gown sits against your natural shape.
Should You Wear Shapewear to Your First Bridal Appointment?
We get this query a lot from brides who like to feel smoothed out and secure under their dress. Our professional advice? Leave the heavy shapewear at home for your first visit.
Your first bridal appointment is all about exploration, movement, and finding the silhouette that makes you feel amazing. Heavy, restrictive shapewear can make it difficult to sit down, move naturally, and actually feel how the dress sits on your body.
Plus, wriggling in and out of multiple sample gowns is a workout in itself—adding tight shapewear into the mix just makes the changing room a bit of a battleground!
When to bring it: Once you have found your dress and you are heading to your first alterations appointment, that is the exact time to bring the specific shapewear you plan to wear on the big day.
The exception: If wearing a lightweight pair of high-waisted smoothing shorts makes you feel more confident stepping into the fitting room, absolutely wear them! Just keep them lightweight and skin-coloured.
Do I Have to Get Naked During My Bridal Appointment?
Let's demystify the fitting room experience. Yes, your stylist will be in the room to help you lift, pull, and zip. Wedding dresses are heavy, structured, and practically impossible to get into by yourself!
