The Golden Timing Rule: How Long Should You Speak?
Aside from when you speak, the most common worry is how long you should stand up there. As a rule of thumb, aim for your speech to be between 3 and 5 minutes long. This is the absolute "sweet spot", as it should allow you to tell a great story but be short enough to keep the room entirely captivated.
In terms of word count, that translates to roughly 400 to 600 words spoken at a calm, steady pace.
The Hook (0–1 min): Introduce yourself, share your relationship to the bride, and thank everyone for coming.
The Trip Down Memory Lane (1–2 mins): Share a funny, sweet, or nostalgic story about the bride before she met her partner. Keep it warm, light, and strictly PG with no mention of ex-boyfriends unless they're in the room and you're confident your story won't upset anyone.
